| Sinopse |
| Nos anos 80, quando
a Alemanha ainda era dividida pelo Muro
de Berlim, o bem-sucedido dramaturgo
Georg Dreyman (Sebastian Koch) e sua
companheira, a famosa atriz Christa-Maria
Sieland (Martina Gedeck), vivem em meio
à elite intelectual da Alemanha
Oriental. Quando o Ministro da Cultura
(Thomas Thieme) interessa-se pela atriz,
o agente do serviço secreto Wiesler
(Ulrich Mühe) recebe a missão
de observar o casal, passando a achar
suas vidas e personalidades cada vez
mais fascinantes. |

| Set in 1984, East
Berlin, Stasi officer Gerd Weisler (Ulrich
Muhe) is ordered to spy on the writer
Georg Dreyman (Sebastian Koch) and girlfriend
Christa-Maria Sieland (Martina Gedeck)
by his superior officer, Hempf... supposedly
to collect data on any anti-government
intent. After Dreyman's best friend
commits suicide from being blacklisted
by the GDR, as well as finding out his
woman has been forced into sexual relations
with Hempf, Dreyman blossoms into the
rebel he was not before. Eventually
gathering enough evidence to hang him,
Weisler feels pity over seeing a peaceful
man brought to malcontent thoughts,
leading him to rethink his life. He
allows his prey to publish a scathing
anti-government article in the newspaper.
Hempf then actively questions Weisler's
actions, but finds he too has emerging
confusion over who he is and why he
does what he does. |
